One unknown device is usually a neighbor's TV. History by place is what separates noise from a problem: does the same device show up at home and at work? That's when it's worth acting.
Only then buy gear — the right category for the specific thing you found. A tracker calls for a detector; a skimming worry calls for shielding. The sections below map the tool to the job.
Job one
Detectors find things that transmit: hidden bugs, GPS trackers, wireless cameras. Sweep methodically — power down the devices you know about, then work room by room (or around the car) and watch the signal strength rise as you close in. Pair the sweep with an RF 4DAT scan: Bluetooth trackers like AirTags and Tiles show up in the app by name, which a raw RF detector can't tell you.

Job two
Detectors answer "is something there?" — meters answer "how much, and on what frequency?" Use this category to understand a space: baseline readings for your home, before-and-after checks when something changes, and identifying which band a signal lives on. These are measurement tools; read them with the manual open and compare against your own baselines.
Measure electric, magnetic, and RF field strength around you.
Look for: tri-axis measurement and separate modes for magnetic, electric, and RF fields — single-axis meters change reading with how you hold them.
See which frequencies are active — the deepest view available.
Look for: coverage of the bands you care about (2.4/5 GHz WiFi, cellular), a waterfall display, and logging. Tinkerers: an RTL-SDR dongle plus a laptop is the budget route.
Quantify signal strength from routers, towers, and nearby devices.
Look for: calibrated readings (µW/m²), peak and average modes, and a stated frequency range that matches what you intend to measure.
Job three
Shielding is physics, not magic: a conductive enclosure attenuates signals in and out. That cuts both ways — a phone in a Faraday bag can't be tracked, and also can't receive your calls. Buy shielding for a specific scenario (parked car fob, cards in a crowd, phone during travel), and test it the day it arrives.
